Speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One, U.S. President Donald Trump said he believes “something will come out of” his highly anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders are set to hold a summit in Alaska.

Trump described Putin as “a smart guy” and said they have “a good level of respect” for each other. He also noted that Putin is bringing many Russian businessmen to the summit, which he considers a “good sign.” However, Trump stressed that no business deals will be made until the war in Ukraine ends.

Serious Consequences and a Path to Peace

On the topic of Russia’s ongoing attacks in Ukraine, Trump said that Putin is attempting to “prepare the ground” for a better deal, but he believes the continued fighting is hurting Putin’s position. Trump reiterated his previous warning that Russia will face “very severe consequences” if it fails to show a willingness to end the war, specifying that these would be “very severe economic” sanctions.

When asked if the U.S. would offer security guarantees to Ukraine, Trump did not rule out the possibility. He suggested it could happen “together with Europe and other countries” but was clear that it would not be in a NATO-style format.

The summit is expected to be a pivotal moment for both leaders as they work to address the conflict in Ukraine and other global issues.
