Despite improved conditions following a drop in temperatures, Portugal continues to fight severe wildfires, one of which remains active in the central part of the country.
Approximately 1,600 firefighters have been mobilized, along with aerial equipment to help extinguish the flames.
“This is perhaps the largest fire ever recorded in Portugal,” said Paulo Fernandes, a professor in the Department of Forest Sciences at the University of Trás-os-Montes, referring to the fire that began in Arganil ten days ago.
According to current estimates, the fire has burned an area of 600,000 hectares. Like neighboring Spain, which has also been heavily affected by wildfires, Portugal has seen a calm in forest fires since yesterday, thanks to the drop in temperatures, which is expected to continue in the coming days.
Since the end of July, the fires have already claimed three lives and injured several others, mostly firefighters, while destroying homes and agricultural crops.
