President Donald Trump revoked Secret Service protection for Kamala Harris on Thursday, according to a copy of a letter first obtained by CNN.
Former presidents are entitled to lifetime Secret Service protection. Harris, as a former vice president, was granted six months of protection after leaving office, according to federal law. This period ended on July 21. However, her protection had been extended for an additional year through a previously undisclosed directive signed by then-President Joe Biden shortly before leaving office, according to multiple people familiar with the undisclosed arrangement.
This is the order that Trump canceled in his letter, titled “Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security.”
“You are hereby authorized to terminate any security arrangements previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” the letter states in full.
The White House and the Secret Service did not immediately respond to CNN’s requests for comment.
Trump’s removal of Harris’s protection comes as she is about to embark on a high-profile book tour in multiple cities for the release of 107 Days, her new memoir reflecting on her brief presidential campaign, set to be published on September 23. The tour will place her in the public spotlight more than she has been since leaving office, during which time she has participated in only a few public events.
“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” said Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Harris, in a statement to CNN.
Presidents and presidential candidates frequently face security threats. Trump himself survived two assassination attempts during his campaign for president last year.
