The trilateral meeting of the chief negotiators of Kosovo and Serbia, Besnik Bislimi and Petar Petković, mediated by the EU Special Envoy Peter Sorensen, concluded today in Brussels.
According to Serbian media RTS, Petković stated that he insisted on the formation of the Association of Serb-Majority Municipalities, but claimed that the Kosovo side was not interested in pursuing this.
Petković added that Bislimi did not respond to whether he would accept the European draft statute for the Association.
“If there is no Association, the question of the survival of the Serb people in Kosovo arises. For us, this is now a humanitarian issue because the Serb population can no longer endure the terror they are experiencing from Kurti’s police and regime. I told Mr. Bislimi this openly,” Petković emphasized.
The Serbian chief negotiator further stated that the formation of the Association is a prerequisite for advancing the dialogue.
“The Community of Serb Municipalities represents a framework for the survival of our people, and we will insist on this. We said that a prerequisite for any further steps is to have the Association we have been waiting for 12 years,” Petković said.
He also noted that the issue of missing persons was discussed.
“We have clearly stated that we are fully committed to resolving this issue, primarily for the benefit of the families who have waited for more than 20 years to learn the full truth about the suffering of their loved ones,” Petković said.
He stressed that Serbia will respond to any request from Sorensen, but added that the Kosovo side is not ready for any agreement.
“The problem is the other side, which is not prepared for any discussion or agreement,” Petković said.
He noted that the session began with a meeting with Sorensen after the Belgrade delegation held a bilateral meeting with Sorensen’s team, and concluded with direct discussions between Kosovo and Serbia.
