U.S. President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum yesterday reinstating the death penalty in Washington, while Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that the Department of Justice will pursue the death penalty nationwide, according to CNN.

“The death penalty is reinstated in Washington,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

“If you kill someone, or if you kill a police officer, a law enforcement officer — the death penalty will apply. And hopefully, that won’t happen,” he added.

The memorandum specifically directs Bondi and U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, to fully implement the death penalty in Washington, White House staff secretary Will Scharf confirmed, as reported by ATSH.

“Not only are we seeking the death penalty in Washington, but also across the entire country,” said Attorney General Bondi, standing alongside Trump in the Oval Office.

The presidential memorandum and Bondi’s statement follow Trump’s announcement last month that he would push for the death penalty in the nation’s capital, describing it as a “very strong deterrent measure.”
