A Syrian court has issued an arrest warrant in absentia for former president Bashar al-Assad over charges related to the 2011 incidents in Daraa.
Investigative judge of Damascus, Tawfiq al-Ali, told the state news agency Sana that the warrant includes charges of premeditated murder, torture leading to death, and unlawful deprivation of liberty.
The court’s decision opens the door for an Interpol arrest warrant and the potential international handling of the case.
The ruling came after a lawsuit filed by the families of the victims of Daraa regarding the incidents that occurred on November 23, 2011.
