Sébastien Lecornu has once again been chosen by French President Emmanuel Macron to form the new government of France.

Although Lecornu had resigned as Prime Minister on Monday morning, before even holding the first cabinet meeting and just one month after being appointed, Macron decided to reassign him to the same position — marking a historic record in French politics.

The Elysée Palace has given the former Defense Minister two days to negotiate with coalition partners and form a new cabinet.

According to French media, Lecornu’s resignation was prompted by the disagreement of Bruno Retailleau, the head of the Republicans, who is part of the minority governing coalition. Retailleau strongly opposed the appointment of Bruno Le Maire as Defense Minister, who had previously served as Finance Minister under François Bayrou’s government.

Le Maire was the architect of a strict budget reform aimed at cutting €44 billion in spending, including reductions in wages, pensions, and paid leave — measures that ultimately led to the fall of his cabinet.

Meanwhile, the opposition is demanding new elections, and some are even calling for Macron’s resignation, accusing him of being responsible for an unprecedented political crisis in which five prime ministers have been replaced in just two years.
