Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is scheduled to meet U.S. President Donald Trump on November 7 in Washington. The meeting aims to discuss a potential U.S.-Russia summit and to seek exemptions from U.S. energy sanctions, according to Orbán’s Chief of Staff.

Gergely Gulyás stated at a press conference that the two leaders will also sign agreements on cooperation in energy, defense, economic, and financial sectors. “Some of these agreements have already been negotiated, while discussions on others are still ongoing,” Gulyás noted.

Previously, Orbán had indicated his intention to sign a broad economic agreement with Washington to offset the impact of U.S. tariffs on the European Union.

Gulyás also mentioned that Orbán and Trump may discuss plans aimed at facilitating a U.S.-Russia meeting to mediate peace in Ukraine. “This meeting also provides an opportunity for both leaders to outline a plan that could lead to a U.S.-Russia summit and, through that, a Russian-Ukrainian peace agreement,” he said.

Earlier this month, Trump announced plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Hungarian capital. However, the meeting was postponed after Russia refused a ceasefire.
