Former NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, has warned that Ukraine could face an “endless war” and gradual territorial erosion if Europe does not significantly increase pressure on Russia.
Rasmussen emphasized the need for troops and missile and drone shields on NATO territory to protect Ukraine from Russian attacks on its infrastructure. He suggested that Poland and other neighboring countries could serve as bases for a NATO-based air and missile defense system, sending a clear message to Russia that any attack on Ukraine would be considered an attack on the entire alliance.
“We need to help Ukrainians defend themselves against Russian missiles and drones by building an air shield that allows them to shoot down attacks,” Rasmussen said.
He also called for the creation of a European defensive force for Ukraine before any ceasefire agreement, warning that the “volunteer coalition” hoped to support this initiative after the war has dwindled to a small group.
“If we don’t make major strategic changes, we will see an endless war. Putin has no incentive to negotiate peace as long as he believes he can win on the battlefield. Changes in speed and mindset are needed,” he added.
During his visits to European capitals, Rasmussen met with various leaders, including the UK’s National Security Adviser, Jonathan Powell, to discuss the possibility of the U.S. providing security guarantees to Ukraine, similar to those given to Qatar after Israel’s attack on Doha.
