U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to take legal action against the British public broadcaster BBC over the editing of a speech in its program Panorama, despite the network issuing an apology but refusing to provide financial compensation.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday evening, Trump stated: “We will sue them for an amount between 1 and 5 billion dollars, possibly as soon as next week.”

On Thursday, the BBC explained that the edited version of Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech had unintentionally “created a misleading impression that President Trump had called for direct violent action” and confirmed that the documentary would no longer be broadcast.

While the broadcaster apologized to the former U.S. president, it maintained that it would not offer financial damages, according to BBC reports.

The BBC issued this statement following threats from Trump’s lawyers, who demanded that the documentary be withdrawn, an apology be issued, and financial compensation of $1 billion be paid, or face legal action.
