The United States will deploy an additional 500 troops to Washington following the shooting attack against two members of the National Guard.

This was announced on Wednesday, November 26, by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during a visit to the Dominican Republic.

“This will only strengthen our determination to ensure that we keep Washington safe and beautiful,” Hegseth stated, announcing the increase in troop numbers, which will bring the total number of National Guard personnel in the capital to over 2,500.

Earlier, foreign media reported that the two soldiers had died in hospital, but according to the BBC, the two servicemembers remain in critical condition.

U.S. President Donald Trump was at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, when the incident occurred. He reacted with shock on his social media platform, Truth Social, writing:

“The person who shot the two members of the National Guard, who are in critical condition, is also severely wounded, but regardless, he will pay a very high price! God bless our National Guard, as well as all our Armed Forces and law enforcement!”
