Venezuela has condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement suggesting that the country’s airspace should be considered closed, BBC reports.

The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described Trump’s remarks as “another extravagant, illegal, and unjustified act of aggression against the Venezuelan people.”

The statement emphasized that the United States has no legal authority to close another country’s airspace and accused Trump of issuing a “colonialist threat.”

Tensions in the region have escalated as the U.S. has increased its military presence and carried out at least 21 attacks on vessels allegedly transporting drugs, resulting in more than 80 deaths. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has condemned these actions, asserting that they are attempts by the United States to overthrow his government.
