Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stated that Europe must build independent security and defense capabilities if it intends to function as a major global power.

In a television interview with La 7, Meloni addressed the new U.S. national security strategy, which suggests that Europe should become more autonomous in defense matters.

Meloni emphasized that relying on external actors for security always comes with a cost, while building self-defense capacity within the European Union is both an “inevitable process” and an “opportunity.” She acknowledged that increased defense investments have economic implications, but argued that they ultimately ensure true political freedom.

The Italian prime minister dismissed claims of a “rift” between the U.S. and the EU, stressing that many American assessments of European policy are accurate and reflect a long-standing reality.

Regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, Meloni reiterated Italy’s long-standing position: support for Ukraine with the goal of building a sustainable peace.

“Peace is built through deterrence, not just good intentions,” she said.

On the question of recognizing Palestine, Meloni noted that Italy is bound by a parliamentary resolution that sets specific conditions, including the disarmament of Hamas and its exclusion from any future role in Gaza.
