US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for foreign affairs will travel to Germany this weekend to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, in the latest round of high-level talks aimed at ending the war.
Steve Witkoff, who has been leading the White House’s efforts to mediate between Ukraine and Russia, will discuss the latest version of the proposed peace agreement in Berlin.
The Trump administration is pushing for a deal to be reached by Christmas and has held several rounds of talks with Ukrainian and Russian representatives in recent weeks, although there are few signs that a major breakthrough is imminent, the BBC reports.
It has not yet been confirmed which European leaders will participate in the Berlin talks. The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the details of the meeting, said that UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are expected to attend.
Confirmation of the Witkoff–Zelensky meeting comes just days after Ukraine submitted a revised version of a 20-point peace plan to the United States. This is the latest iteration of a proposal that first emerged in late November and has since triggered a wave of diplomatic activity.
