Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, along with doctors working in Gaza, have been officially nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, according to Matjaž Nemec, a Member of the European Parliament from the Socialists and Democrats group.
The nomination, initiated by Nemec, has been signed by nearly 300 nominators from 33 countries worldwide, Nemec’s parliamentary office confirmed.
Recognition of Courage and Humanitarian Commitment
Nemec stated that the nomination represents a tribute to the courage, perseverance, and dedication of individuals who defend fundamental human values under the most extreme conditions.
“This nomination is an expression of respect for those who stand for humanity, peace, and dignity beyond political divisions,” Nemec said.
He emphasized that Francesca Albanese’s work points toward a more just and solidaristic society, noting that she has faced intense political pressure, including threats of sanctions, particularly from Israel and the United States, due to her reporting and advocacy.
Honoring Medical Workers in Gaza
The nomination also includes doctors from Gaza, among them Dr. Husam Abu Safiya and Sara Al-Saka, who, according to Nemec, risk their lives daily while carrying out their fundamental medical mission in the midst of armed conflict.
A Global Call for International Law and Human Rights
Nemec stressed that the proposal, which has evolved into a global campaign, is also a collective call to the international community and political leaders worldwide to respect international law, human rights, and human dignity—regardless of political circumstances.
“This is a call for peace grounded in law, justice, and universal human values,” Nemec concluded.
