FBI Director Kash Patel announced that the large but aging “J. Edgar Hoover” building will be permanently closed, and the agency will relocate its workforce to existing office spaces elsewhere.

Some FBI staff will move to the Ronald Reagan Building and the International Trade Center in Washington, D.C., taking over former offices of the U.S. Agency for International Development.

“After more than 20 years of failed attempts, we finalized a plan to permanently close the FBI headquarters at Hoover and relocate the workforce to a secure and modern facility,” Patel wrote.

He emphasized that the Hoover building will close permanently.

Patel added:

“This decision places resources where they belong: protecting the homeland, combating violent crime, and safeguarding national security. It provides the FBI workforce with better tools at a much lower cost.”

In November, Maryland leaders sued the Trump administration after it abandoned plans to move the bureau’s headquarters to the state, noting that Congress had already allocated funds for the relocation.
