Indonesia has announced plans to deploy up to 8,000 troops to the Gaza Strip, becoming the first country to take such a step as part of the second phase of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement reached at the end of last year.
Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Military, General Maruli Simanjuntak, stated that troop training has already begun, with their focus primarily on medical and engineering roles.
Part of Trump’s Peace Board
Indonesia has joined the Peace Board established by U.S. President Donald Trump last month.
The board is expected to hold its first meeting in Washington on 19 February, where discussions will include the formation of a Palestinian technocratic government and the reconstruction of Gaza after the conflict.
Meanwhile, other countries, including Turkey and Pakistan, are considering sending troops but have emphasized that their role would be limited to peacekeeping duties, without involvement in disarming Hamas.
