The head of the European Union Office in Kosovo, Aivo Orav, stated that the EU’s High Representative, Josep Borrell, has recommended lifting sanctions against Kosovo, while discussions continue with members of the Council.
Orav emphasized that the EU has gained new momentum for its expansion, but Kosovo and the countries of the Western Balkans have work and issues to resolve among themselves.
“EU membership is a very important issue; it is also an obligation for the EU to respond to history, especially now with the return of war globally due to Russian aggression in Ukraine. This new momentum for expansion is happening right now; we have recently opened negotiations with Albania after many years of work,” he said.
“Once you adapt reforms in line with the EU agendas, we will support you with funds. Kosovo and the countries of the Western Balkans have much work to do, including resolving issues with each other. The EU, on the other hand, shows its commitment to you through financial assistance,” Orav stated.
Regarding the terrorist attack in Banjskë and the police response, he noted that it demonstrated the professional reaction of the Kosovo Police.
According to him, Kosovo has made good progress in establishing a functional economy, but the Assembly has faced challenges in advancing necessary laws.
“Improvements are expected in the judiciary; Kosovo has a higher level of clearing cases and has accumulated a significant number of pending matters. In the environmental field, we have made limited progress,” he said.
The EU ambassador in Prishtina mentioned that Kosovo and Serbia need to continue moving toward normalizing relations with each other, adding that Borrell has recommended lifting the sanctions and discussions are ongoing with Council members.
“Constant progress over the years means approaching the EU; Kosovo must engage in combating corruption and strengthening the judiciary,” Orav declared.
