The American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo (OEAK) has urged the Kosovo Government to lift the 10% customs tariff on goods from the United States. This request follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to implement a 10% tariff on imports from all countries, including Kosovo and other Western Balkan nations.
OEAK Chairman Arian Zeka explained to Radio Free Europe that the tariff imposed by the U.S. will negatively impact Kosovo’s exporters and reduce the competitive edge of Kosovo products in the American market.
Key Highlights:
- The American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo is calling for the removal of the 10% tariff on U.S. goods.
- This request comes after Donald Trump’s decision to impose a global tariff on imports.
- Zeka suggested that if Kosovo unilaterally removes its tariff, it may prompt the U.S. to lift its tariff in return.
Kosovo’s Trade and Industry Chamber expressed concern over the decision, stating that it will further impact Kosovo’s exports to the U.S., which have already declined in recent months.
Additionally, Kosovo’s customs data reveals that exports to the U.S. have increased significantly since 2019, with a sharp rise from €3 million in 2019 to over €131 million by 2022. Products exported include food, beverages, textiles, mattresses, and wood and plastic products.
The U.S. tariff decision, announced on April 2, not only affects Kosovo but also imposes higher tariffs on several countries with a trade surplus with the U.S., raising concerns about potential trade wars and inflation.
