On the eve of an official state visit by the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, the Association of Journalists of Kosovo (AGK) issued a prominent public appeal on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. The advocacy group, representing over 700 local media professionals, is urging the top European Union official to firmly address deteriorating press freedom standards during his bilateral meeting with Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti.
The political timing of the appeal is highly charged, arriving as Kosovo navigates a tense domestic landscape just days before the country’s pivotal parliamentary elections scheduled for June 7, 2026.
A Documented Democratic Decline
The AGK’s public letter paints a stark picture of the working environment for independent journalists in Kosovo, citing structural setbacks validated by prominent international watchdog monitors.
According to the association, Kosovo has experienced a sharp, downward trajectory in global media rankings over the last few years. This decline was heavily documented during a March 2026 fact-finding mission conducted by the Council of Europe’s Platform for the Protection of Journalism and Safety of Journalists.
The AGK directly attributes this degradation to institutional hostility from the executive branch:
- Sustained Smear Campaigns: The ruling party, Lëvizja Vetëvendosje (LVV), and government officials have allegedly engaged in coordinated denigration campaigns against specific journalists and critical media outlets to undermine their public credibility.
- Compromised Institutional Autonomy: Independent media oversight bodies—such as the Independent Media Commission (KPM) and the public broadcaster Radio Television of Kosovo (RTK)—have allegedly been subjected to direct political capture through highly politicized board appointment processes.
Media Freedom as a Non-Negotiable Prerequisite for EU Integration
The AGK emphasized that if the current administration remains genuinely committed to its stated goal of European integration, it must align its treatment of the press with Western democratic benchmarks.

Ruling Party Pressures
“AGK hopes that Mr. Costa will remind Prime Minister Kurti that respecting media freedom is key on the road to European Union membership, an aspiration shared by the vast majority of the people of Kosovo,” the association’s official reaction stated.
The journalists’ syndicate reiterated that independent reporters perform a vital public service by acting as an irreplaceable check on institutional power, warning that any further erosion of press safety will severely compromise Kosovo’s Western alignment.
