“We bring you great joy: We have a Pope! Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost – Leo XIV,” wrote the Cathedral on Facebook.
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost from the United States has been elected as the 267th Pope. He becomes the first American Pope in history. The 69-year-old hails from Chicago, Illinois, and will be known as Leo XIV.
A leader with global experience, he spent most of his career as a missionary in South America and recently led the powerful Vatican office responsible for bishop appointments. He is expected to build upon the reforms of Pope Francis.
Prevost spent a decade working in Trujillo, Peru, before being appointed bishop of Chiclayo, another Peruvian city, where he served from 2014 to 2023.
