The Infectious Diseases Clinic of the University Clinical Center of Kosovo (UCCK) has reported the first death of a patient diagnosed with West Nile virus (WNV) in Kosovo.
According to the clinic, the patient, identified by the initials Rr. I., born on May 2, 1960, was hospitalized on September 10 at the Infectious Diseases Clinic with a diagnosis of acute meningoencephalitis and was in serious condition.
Before being hospitalized, the patient had received five days of outpatient treatment. Upon admission to the Infectious Diseases Clinic, diagnostic examinations were carried out and medical treatment was started immediately, along with the necessary specialist consultations.
As part of the laboratory investigations, an RT-PCR test for West Nile virus was also performed, which returned positive.
The patient’s condition remained extremely serious and required intensive treatment. According to UCCK, medical staff took all necessary measures and procedures and continued treatment in accordance with his clinical condition.
Despite the efforts of the medical staff and the treatment provided, the patient died on September 15, 2026, at 8:40 a.m.
This is the first reported death in Kosovo of a patient diagnosed with West Nile virus.
