Earthquake in Myanmar: Death Toll Reaches Around 1,000

At least 1,000 people have died and 2,376 others have been injured due to a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday, according to the country’s state television.

Meanwhile, the earthquake has also killed 9 people in Thailand, and more than 30 others are trapped under rubble.

The military regime leading Myanmar has requested humanitarian aid from the international community and declared a state of emergency in six regions of the country.

Several countries have sent their rescue teams to assist in easing the situation caused by the natural disaster. The tremors have also caused damage in Bangladesh and China, and were felt as far as Vietnam.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 17 kilometers from the city of Mandalay, which has a population of 1.2 million. Just 12 minutes after the first quake, a second earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck Myanmar.

The epicenter of the second quake was located 18 kilometers south of the city of Sagaing.
