European Union Special Representative for the Kosovo–Serbia Dialogue Peter Sorensen held an unannounced meeting with acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti in Pristina on Friday, during which the two discussed the normalization dialogue, regional developments, and the issue of former Serbian officials who resigned from Kosovo’s institutions in 2022.
According to a statement issued by the Kosovo Government, the meeting focused on Kosovo’s relations with the European Union, the situation in the Western Balkans, and the current stage of the EU-facilitated dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia.
Kurti reaffirmed Kosovo’s commitment to a constructive approach in the dialogue process, emphasizing that the country remains committed to achieving lasting peace, Euro-Atlantic security, long-term regional stability, and good neighborly relations based on European values.
The government said Sorensen raised the issue of the possible return of Serbian prosecutors and judges who resigned from Kosovo’s institutions nearly four years ago.
Responding to the matter, Kurti stressed that Kosovo’s institutions are guided by constitutional order, the rule of law, equality of citizens, and the inclusion of all communities.
He said public institutions should remain multiethnic and staffed by professionals with the necessary qualifications and ethical integrity, including within the police, judiciary, and prosecution.
According to Kurti, the collective resignations by Serbian officials in northern Kosovo in 2022 were intended to undermine the country’s multiethnic institutional framework.
“The way forward is determined by the Constitution and the laws of Kosovo,” Kurti said, adding that in the judicial system this means preserving its multiethnic character while ensuring the independence and quality of justice.
The meeting also addressed other issues related to the dialogue process, with both sides highlighting the importance of respecting and implementing the Brussels Basic Agreement and the Ohrid Implementation Annex.
