European Union diplomats have agreed on a new set of sanctions targeting Iranian individuals accused of obstructing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced the political agreement following a meeting in Luxembourg on Tuesday, stating that the sanctions will be expanded to include those responsible for violating freedom of movement in the strategic waterway.

“We have reached a political agreement to expand sanctions against those responsible for violating freedom of movement,” Kallas said.

She stressed that freedom of navigation through the strait is “non-negotiable,” warning that daily disruptions to maritime traffic are “reckless” and destabilizing.

Kallas also noted that transit through the strait should remain “free of charge,” referring to Iran’s reported decision to impose fees on passage through the Hormuz corridor.

She added that a potential European naval mission would be the “fastest way” to ensure safe passage once conditions allow for stabilization and peace in the region.
