The European Union has called on Serbia to clarify how address checks are being conducted in the country’s southern regions and whether these areas are specifically targeted for residence status reviews, leading to address deactivations.
Ana Pisonero, spokesperson for the European Commission, confirmed that this issue was addressed in Serbia’s progress report published last month.
“We have made it clear that Serbian authorities need to better explain to the public how residence status checks are being carried out, resulting in the deactivation of specific addresses, and whether Southern Serbia is being specifically targeted in this regard,” Pisonero stated.
Recently, Serbia’s Constitutional Court rejected an appeal by a Medvegjë resident seeking the reinstatement of their residential address.
Pisonero emphasized that EU institutions are aware of the concerns of the Albanian community in Serbia regarding this issue:
“We are monitoring the situation in light of Serbia’s commitments under its EU accession negotiations, particularly those related to the rights of national minorities,” she noted.
