A significant milestone for the Albanian economy was reached this Tuesday, May 12, with the signing of a new financing agreement between the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Albania. The initiative aims to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the country, focusing on innovation, digitalization, and the green transition.
The Financial Package
The agreement establishes a €20 million credit line specifically designed for local businesses. To further incentivize modern investments, the package includes:
- Targeted Funding: Support for digital technology and green energy projects.
- Incentive Grants: A 10% grant stimulus to accompany the loans, reducing the overall financial burden on qualifying entrepreneurs.
Prime Minister Rama on EU Integration
Prime Minister Edi Rama attended the signing ceremony alongside Nadia Calviño, President of the EIB. During his address, Rama delivered a strong message regarding Albania’s geopolitical direction and its commitment to European standards.
“For us, supporting those who believe in free enterprise is vital. Small and medium enterprises are our most important partners in job creation and providing opportunities for the youth,” Rama stated.
Addressing the broader context of European integration, the Prime Minister was unequivocal:
- No Alternatives: Rama emphasized that Albania has never had a “Plan B,” asserting that historical alternatives to the EU model lacked freedom and the rule of law.
- Digital Transformation: He highlighted Albania’s progress in governance, noting that the country has successfully moved services to digital platforms, allowing citizens to interact with the state via mobile devices from anywhere in the world.
- Cultural Connection: The Prime Minister also thanked Intesa Sanpaolo for investing in culture, describing it as the “deep bond” that connects Albania to the European identity.
Strengthening the Relationship
President Nadia Calviño’s visit signals a deepening partnership between the EIB and Albania. By focusing on “Safety by Design” and digital resilience, the financing aims to make Albanian businesses more competitive on the European stage as the country continues its journey toward full EU membership.
