Google Maps has renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the “American Gulf” for users in the United States, following a unilateral decision by the U.S. government.
For users outside the U.S., both names appear, with “Gulf of Mexico” listed first, followed by “American Gulf” in parentheses.
U.S. Government Directive Behind the Change
The U.S. Board on Geographic Names officially changed the name on Monday, following an order from President Donald Trump, who justified the move as a tribute to “American greatness” shortly after assuming office.
Google defended the change, stating:
“This is a longstanding practice: When official names differ between countries, Google Maps displays the local official name for users in that region. The rest of the world sees both names.”
Mexico Rejects the Change
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded firmly, stating:
“For us, it will always be the Gulf of Mexico. For the rest of the world, it remains the Gulf of Mexico.”
The Gulf has been known by its current name since the 16th century, and this renaming has already sparked diplomatic tensions.
