Iran says a degree of “understanding” has been reached with the United States on several issues, but a full agreement is not close, according to a statement by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, as reported by CNN.
Speaking at a press conference in Tehran, Baghaei stressed that there is “no whatsoever guarantee” that the United States will uphold its commitments.
He added that Iran’s nuclear program is not currently part of the negotiations at this stage and reiterated Tehran’s position that broader hostilities must end across all fronts, including Lebanon.
According to Baghaei, Iran is seeking to delay detailed discussions on its nuclear program until an official end to the ongoing conflict is declared.
He also criticized what he described as inconsistent positions from the Trump administration, saying that within “just a few hours” contradictory stances emerge, which complicates any negotiation process.
Baghaei further addressed discussions around the Strait of Hormuz, rejecting the idea of a transit “tariff,” and instead framing Iran’s proposal as payment for services such as navigation assistance and environmental protection.
He concluded that any responsible country would support the creation of a “reliable and predictable mechanism” for managing transit through the strategic waterway.
