Kosovo’s new Law on Citizenship has officially entered into force today, introducing important changes to the procedures for acquiring and reacquiring citizenship.
The law aims to simplify and modernize the application process by reducing the required documentation and significantly shortening the deadlines for processing applications.
One of the main changes concerns the reacquisition of citizenship for individuals who previously renounced it for objective reasons.
Under the new provisions, applicants are now required to submit only a completed application form and proof that they have not been convicted by a final court decision in the country where they reside.
Applications for citizenship can also now be submitted online via the e-Kosova platform, while the review period has been reduced from six months to 30 days.
The law was adopted on 23 April 2026 by the Assembly of Kosovo and is considered one of the most significant reforms in this field, particularly for the Kosovo diaspora.
