Japanese police have arrested a former employee of MUFG Bank for stealing valuables from customers’ safes, according to police sources.

Yukari Imamura, 46, is suspected of stealing around 20 kilograms of gold bars valued at approximately 260 million yen ($1.6 million) that had been deposited by two customers at a branch of Nerima Bank in Tokyo last September.

Reports indicate that the police believe Imamura, a former employee responsible for managing safes at several MUFG Bank branches, used a spare key located at the Nerima branch to access the vaults.

She is suspected of selling the stolen gold to pawnshops and other buyers and used the proceeds for investments.

According to the bank, she is believed to have stolen property from around 60 clients over a period of approximately four and a half years until October 2024. Imamura admitted to the theft, was dismissed from the bank in November, and the bank filed charges against her in December.
