The European Union plans to significantly expand its sanctions against Russia in the coming months, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told a German newspaper.

“EU sanctions have cost Russia dearly, depriving the Russian war machine of more than €1 trillion, and for the autumn I am presenting the broadest sanctions lists since the beginning of the war,” she told the German daily Die Welt.

“Once adopted, they would increase the overall number of sanctioned Russian entities by one third. The pressure must continue to increase until Moscow ends its war,” Kallas said.

Kallas did not provide further details on the timing or specific measures included in the new sanctions package.

In July, the EU adopted its latest package of sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine, imposing restrictions on the country’s banking sector and cryptocurrency networks.
