A Serbian television station began its news bulletin with an unusual apology to viewers, admitting that for years it had failed to fulfil its journalistic mission properly. The reaction was shared on X by French journalist Alex Taylor, amid political developments in Serbia following the reported electoral defeat of Aleksandar Vučić’s ruling camp to the student movement.
In the video, the presenter apologises to viewers, saying: “For years, we failed to fulfil our duty. We remained silent, turned a blind eye, reported events in a one-sided manner and failed to ask the necessary questions. We owe our viewers an apology.”
French journalist Alex Taylor commented: “This is truly something special! A Serbian television channel began yesterday’s news bulletin by apologising to its viewers.”
British MP Alicia Kearns, who has repeatedly raised concerns about the lack of independent journalism in Serbia, also shared the post.
“This is extraordinary and confirms all the concerns many of us have repeatedly raised about media freedom in Serbia,” she wrote.
