On the occasion of the Memorial Day for fallen police officers, the Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Glauk Konjufca, Deputy Prime Minister Besnik Bislimi, Minister of Internal Affairs Xhelal Sveçla, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Donika Gërvalla paid their respects at the site where police officer Enver Zymeri was killed.
Speaker Glauk Konjufca also visited the family of police officer Afrim Bunjaku in Samadrexhë, who was killed in Banjska by criminal structures from Serbia, as well as the family of police officer Enver Zymeri in Duboc, Vushtrri, who was killed on duty in Zupç, Zubin Potok, 13 years ago.
Konjufca stated that heroes Enver Zymeri and Afrim Bunjaku sacrificed their lives defending the state and sovereignty of the Republic of Kosovo.
Konjufca: Kosovo Institutions Will Stand by the Families of Our Heroes
“Today, July 26, is the day to remember all the police officers who fell in the line of duty. At the same time, we visited the families of Afrim Bunjaku and Enver Zymeri, our heroes who fell, giving their lives to protect our state and the sovereignty of the Republic of Kosovo. We paid our respects to Afrim, Enver, and all the other police officers who have fallen in duty—23 of them giving their lives and setting an example that, to protect our future security and the safety of our children, no sacrifice is too great. The institutions of the Republic of Kosovo will always stand by the families of our heroes and other fallen officers because this is how we show that we are a serious state, one that holds the example of sacrifice for our common good at the highest level,” said Konjufca.
Elshani: Measures Were Necessary
The Deputy Director of the Kosovo Police for the North Mitrovica region, Veton Elshani, spoke about the measures taken during the diving competitions in Ujman, which are held for the first time on the Memorial Day for fallen police officers. He stated that the presence of the Kosovo Police was necessary as a security measure, but not as provocation.
“Security has been at a high level and remains so, so I believe everything will end peacefully. If intervention is needed, we will be here… This ceremony and these competitions that took place here are, I believe, unprecedented. For this reason, initial measures are taken to ensure everything goes smoothly and peacefully, so these are necessary measures… Some may see it as provocation, but for us, it is merely a duty,” said Elshani.
He did not wish to comment on the refusal to provide a security measure for the Mayor of Zveçan, stating that this issue should be addressed by the General Directorate of Police in Mitrovica.
Sveçla: Let Us Remember Our Martyrs
Minister of Internal Affairs Xhelal Sveçla commemorated the fallen police officers, stating that they will always be remembered.
“I thank most of all those who gave their lives for this country, for this state, and I thank their families. I assure you that we are always by their side, as is the people. We have tried every day not only to remember them but also to advance their ideals… I also want to thank the divers, who pleased us with their activity, as well as everyone else, the Kosovo Police, who ensured that this part of our territory marked this day… This day will be remembered forever. We will work to increase both the number and activities to honor our martyrs,” said Sveçla.
