The Organization of War Veterans of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) will hold a symbolic solidarity event outside the European Union Office in Prishtina on Thursday, marking six years since the arrest of former KLA leaders.
Gazmend Syla, deputy chairman of the organization, announced at a press conference that the event would begin at noon and would be intended to express support for the former KLA leaders currently facing proceedings before the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague.
“Tomorrow marks six years since the arrest of the former KLA leaders. On this occasion, we will organize a symbolic activity to express our solidarity with them. The event will take place tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in front of the European Union Office in Prishtina,” Syla said.
He added that the organization had asked the Association of Kosovo Municipalities to encourage mayors to appear outside municipal buildings in a show of solidarity.
Syla stressed that the gathering would be peaceful and institutional, saying it was intended to demonstrate that the organization was not indifferent to what it considers an injustice.
The deputy chairman also reiterated his disappointment over the president’s decision to return amendments to the Law on the Specialist Chambers to the Kosovo Assembly.
He described the move as unacceptable and said the organization had been disappointed by the outcome after what he called a campaign to secure support for the proposed legislation.
“We are very disappointed and are waiting for MPs to reconsider their position. We are convinced that any legislation introduced after this will be weaker than the one that was returned. Therefore, responsibility for this issue remains with the Kosovo Assembly,” Syla said.
The proposed amendments have become a subject of debate among Kosovo political institutions and representatives of KLA veterans, with the Assembly expected to consider the issue further.
