Charles Kupchan, a professor at Georgetown University in Washington, has assessed that the security situation in the four northern municipalities has the potential for escalation.
According to him, the Serbian state wants to hinder the normalization of relations.
“These types of reports about exercises, whether paramilitary or extremist, have already seen us through several dangerous moments not long ago, in Banjska. We know there is a potential for an outbreak of violence. These kinds of reports are very worrying. I don’t believe we are looking at a war situation between Kosovo and Serbia. Undoubtedly, there are actors who might choose violence, or see violence as a way to disrupt normalization by affecting the non-forward movement of the dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade,” Kupchan told tevë1.
A few days ago, the Director of Police, Gazmend Hoxha, also warned that there are groups being trained by Serbia to attack the Kosovo Police.
On September 24 in Banjska, Zvečan, a Serbian paramilitary group entered through illegal routes and attacked the Kosovo Police, where officer Afrim Bunjaku was killed.
