French President Emmanuel Macron today warned in Lisbon against a “happy vassalage” of Europe to the United States, urging it to “transform” and rediscover “the taste for risk and strength.”
“The answer is not surrender. I am not in favor of happy vassalage,” he declared during a meeting with Franco-Portuguese technology companies.
“I see many people in our Europe saying, ‘We will have to behave well with the Americans, it will pass, we need to bow down.’ We need to be polite, but we must protect who we are,” the French head of state insisted.
