The threats facing NATO are becoming increasingly interconnected, but they remain “unmatched” by the Alliance’s unity, stated U.S. General Alexus Grynkewich today as he assumed command of the organization’s special operations.
New Leadership and Continued Transformation
“These are challenging times. The challenges that we and our partners face are becoming more complex and interconnected, but they are unmatched by the unity and purpose that NATO nations share,” General Grynkewich remarked during his change of command ceremony in Mons, Belgium.
Grynkewich, appointed by President Donald Trump, confirmed by the U.S. Senate, and approved by the North Atlantic Council, emphasized that he will maintain the pace set by his predecessor, General Christopher Cavoli, in transforming NATO’s command operations.
“Allies stand ready to defend our nations, and we will only improve,” General Grynkewich affirmed.
Role of SACEUR and Grynkewich’s Background
The Special Operations Command (SACEUR), always led by an American general, is responsible for planning and executing all NATO operations, including those in the event of an attack on a member state.
Alexus Grynkewich has Belarusian roots; his ancestors emigrated to the United States in 1899 to escape the then-Russian occupation.
