The leader of Vetëvendosje Movement (VV), Albin Kurti, has until October 26 to secure a parliamentary majority and propose the formation of a new government.
However, if Kurti fails to gather the necessary 61 votes, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) is signaling that it will take the initiative to build a new parliamentary majority.
PDK MP Rashit Qalaj stated that while his party is waiting for Vetëvendosje to take responsibility as the election winner, PDK is ready to act if Kurti cannot form the government.
“We are waiting for the party that won the most seats in the Parliament of Kosovo to create a parliamentary majority and form a government. Since Albin Kurti has officially been mandated, it is his duty to do so. If he fails, PDK will then take the initiative to form a majority and establish a government,” Qalaj told IndeksOnline.
Qalaj also ruled out any possibility of a coalition or joint governance with Vetëvendosje, emphasizing that PDK has no interest in cooperating with Kurti’s party.
“We have no interest in joining a coalition with VV or being part of any government led by Albin Kurti. In no scenario will I be part of a government or ministry headed by VV,” Qalaj stressed.
He added that PDK, as the second-largest party in the Kosovo Parliament, is prepared to make serious efforts to form a new government.
According to the Constitution of Kosovo, if the first candidate for prime minister fails to secure enough votes, the President has 10 days to nominate another candidate. If the second attempt also fails, the country will head to new elections, which must be held within 40 days of the official announcement.
