Former Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusić has stated that Europe should move toward creating a new defense alliance parallel to NATO, at a time when the role of the United States in European security is becoming increasingly uncertain.

Pusić said that Europeans must prepare for a scenario in which the United States could withdraw from its traditional security commitments in Europe.

Commenting on a hypothetical scenario raised by Veton Surroi, in which U.S. President Donald Trump might declare that the “Bondsteel” military base in Kosovo is “no longer needed,” Pusić said that in such a case Europeans would have to take responsibility for the security of the continent.

According to her, the “coalition of the willing,” initially formed to support Ukraine, could become the nucleus of a new European security alliance.

“It is a nucleus of a future security alliance that will not include the United States, but will include Canada, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and potentially other partner countries,” she said.

Pusić emphasized that Turkey is an important regional power and would be a key part of such a European security structure.

She added that Russia’s war against Ukraine and the approach of the Trump administration have increased political homogeneity within Europe, bringing together right- and left-wing leaders around defense and security issues.
