Russia is carrying out an “reckless” sabotage campaign across Europe while simultaneously ramping up its nuclear rhetoric to intimidate other nations from supporting Ukraine, according to the head of Britain’s foreign intelligence service, MI6.
Richard Moore, who leads the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service, delivered the remarks during a speech in Paris on November 29. He warned that if Russian President Vladimir Putin succeeds in turning Ukraine into a vassal state, he would not stop there.
“Our security—British, French, European, and transatlantic—would be at risk,” Moore stated.
He went on to describe Russia’s actions as a “reckless campaign of sabotage” across Europe, with Putin and his allies utilizing nuclear threats to create fear about the consequences of aiding Ukraine.
Moore emphasized that while the price of supporting Ukraine is clear, the “price of inactivity would be infinitely higher.” He warned that if Putin succeeds, countries like China, North Korea, and Iran would benefit from the shift in global power dynamics.
The MI6 chief’s comments seemed aimed at rallying European allies and addressing skeptics about the importance of supporting Ukraine. Moore’s remarks align with warnings from other Western intelligence leaders, who have also raised concerns over Russia’s increasing sabotage efforts.
Growing Cyberattacks and Sabotage by Russia
NATO and Western intelligence services have confirmed that Russia is behind a series of hostile activities throughout the Euro-Atlantic zone, including ongoing cyberattacks, which Moscow has denied.
Last month, the UK’s internal intelligence service, MI5, reported that Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU, was actively seeking to stir “chaos” in Britain and Europe. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to destabilize the region amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly regarding the war in Ukraine.
