Mark Rutte has issued a sharp warning to Russia, stating that any use of nuclear weapons in the war against Ukraine would trigger a “devastating” response from the Western military alliance.
Speaking about the security situation in Europe and the ongoing war in Ukraine now entering its fifth year Rutte stressed that the Kremlin is fully aware of the consequences such an action would bring. According to him, any nuclear escalation would fundamentally change the nature of the conflict and pose a direct threat to global security.
“Russians know that if they use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, NATO’s response will be devastating,” Rutte said, underlining that the alliance remains united and fully prepared to respond to any strategic threat.
His remarks come amid heightened tensions between Russia and Western countries, as Moscow continues its military operations in Ukraine while the West increases military support for Kyiv.
The nuclear rhetoric has reignited international concerns over the risk of uncontrolled escalation in the conflict. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Russian officials have repeatedly made statements that Western governments have interpreted as indirect nuclear threats. In response, NATO has consistently warned that any use of nuclear weapons would carry severe political, military, and economic consequences for Russia.
Meanwhile, NATO member states have increased defence spending, reinforced their military presence along Europe’s eastern flank, and intensified strategic coordination in what they describe as the most serious security challenge on the continent in decades.
