Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha lashed out at Prime Minister Edi Rama, claiming that Albania has abandoned him ahead of the May 11 elections. As proof, Berisha pointed to the low turnout at Skënderbej Square during the Socialist Party’s campaign launch, A2 CNN reported.

“I have a message for Edi Rama. Do not use God’s name. Do not use Skënderbej’s name. Do not use Ismail Qemali’s name. Do not use the national flag or anthem to cover up your thefts,” Berisha said at the Democratic Party Assembly, where the party’s electoral program was presented.

“You brought a gang of thieves to Albania and looted this country for 12 consecutive years. No matter what names you invoke, you cannot cover up their thefts. Edi Rama, the people have abandoned you. Albania and the world saw the empty square.”

Berisha accused Rama of trying to lure Albanians with promises of European prosperity, saying that even the promise of a European passport was just an attempt to distract from his alleged corruption.

“He spoke today about the money he will receive from the EU but said nothing about the money he has already stolen from you. By playing with Albanians’ European aspirations, Edi Rama is trying to cover up his thefts with a fake European passport in his hands,” Berisha said.
