Health authorities have confirmed a second case of Hantavirus linked to a fatal outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius, which was traveling through the Atlantic Ocean. The confirmation comes after three passengers died and a British national was left in critical condition.
The ship’s operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, confirmed the fatalities include a Dutch man, a Dutch woman, and a German national.
Current Status of the Outbreak
Medical officials in South Africa, where the vessel eventually docked for emergency assistance, provided the following updates:
- Confirmed Cases: The virus was officially identified in a 69-year-old British passenger currently receiving intensive care at a South African hospital. It was also confirmed post-mortem in the Dutch woman who passed away.
- Ongoing Investigations: Authorities are still investigating whether Hantavirus was the definitive cause of death for the German national and the Dutch man, or if other factors contributed to the fatalities.
- The Vessel: The MV Hondius is an expedition ship often used for polar and remote Atlantic voyages. Oceanwide Expeditions stated they are cooperating fully with international health organizations to trace the source of the infection.
Understanding Hantavirus
Hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread mainly by rodents. Humans can become infected through contact with rodent urine, saliva, or droppings, or by breathing in aerosolized particles contaminated with the virus.
Symptoms typically include fever, severe muscle aches, and fatigue, which can progress rapidly to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a severe and sometimes fatal respiratory disease.
Precautionary Measures
The discovery of the virus on a cruise ship is highly unusual, as outbreaks are typically associated with rural or wilderness areas where rodent-to-human contact is more frequent. Health experts are currently inspecting the MV Hondius for signs of rodent infestation or contaminated food and water supplies to prevent further spread.
Passengers who were recently aboard the vessel have been advised to monitor their health closely for flu-like symptoms and seek immediate medical attention if they experience shortness of breath.
