United States Secret Service agents opened fire on an armed individual near the Washington Monument on Monday afternoon following a dynamic confrontation that left both the suspect and a young bystander hospitalized.
The shooting occurred in a high-traffic tourist zone on the National Mall, just a short distance from the White House, during the late afternoon rush.
Sequence of Events
The incident began when plainclothes officers identified a man carrying a firearm and requested immediate backup. As the suspect attempted to flee the scene, an exchange of gunfire ensued between the individual and law enforcement.
Matthew Quinn, Deputy Director of the Secret Service, confirmed that a weapon was recovered at the scene. “Whether or not it was directed to the president or not, I don’t know,” Quinn stated during a press briefing. “But we will find out.”
Notably, Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade had passed through the same area shortly before the shots were fired.
Casualties and Investigation
- The Suspect: Taken to a local hospital; his current condition has not been officially released.
- Bystander: A child in the vicinity was struck during the exchange. Officials stated the injuries are not life-threatening.
- Investigation: The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has taken the lead on investigating the law enforcement use of force, as per standard protocol.
Context of Heightened Security
This incident marks the latest in a series of security breaches in the capital. Just last week, a gunman attempted to infiltrate the security perimeter of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in an alleged assassination attempt against President Donald Trump.
Furthermore, the shooting follows a tragic event months prior where a gunman attacked National Guard soldiers near the White House. In response to the escalating volatility, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles recently convened emergency meetings with the Department of Homeland Security and Secret Service leadership to overhaul protection protocols for major presidential events.
At this time, the Ellipse and surrounding areas of the National Mall remain under heavy surveillance as federal agents continue their sweep of the site.
