The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will today vote with a 2/3 majority of all present deputies from all member states to recommend the Ministerial Council for the accession of the Republic of Kosovo to the Council of Europe.

A successful vote would pave the way for the final step, the decision of the Ministerial Council, which could have the first opportunity to place Kosovo’s accession on the agenda on May 16, when the Council of Europe marks its 75th anniversary.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Donika Gërvalla, told public television that the day of the vote is a giant step towards membership, but it is not the final step, as the final step also requires the vote of the foreign ministers.

The Council of Europe is the leading organization in Europe in the field of human rights. Its members include 46 states, including 27 member states of the European Union and all countries in the region.

The European Court of Human Rights – based in Strasbourg, France, monitors the implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Kosovo submitted its application for membership in the Council of Europe in May 2022 shortly after Russia’s exclusion from this organization following the aggression in Ukraine.
