Former President Vjosa Osmani has shared a high-profile letter from U.S. President Donald Trump, marking the conclusion of her five-year presidential mandate. The letter, dated April 8, 2026, serves as a powerful endorsement of Osmani’s leadership and solidifies her role as a key architect of the modern Kosovo-U.S. alliance.

The “Legacy of Courage”

In the personal correspondence, President Trump expressed his admiration for Osmani’s “brave and decisive leadership” during a period of significant regional and global shifts.

“You have always been a friend and a reliable partner of the United States,” Trump wrote, adding that her tenure leaves behind a “significant legacy that will shape the future of your country, the Balkan region, and all of Europe.”

The “Board of Peace” Collaboration

A central highlight of the letter is the recognition of Kosovo’s founding role in the Board of Peace (BoP), an international conflict-resolution organization established by Trump in January 2026.

  • Founding Member: Under Osmani’s leadership, Kosovo was among the first 25 countries to join the BoP, participating in the inaugural summit in Davos.
  • Global Security Contribution: Trump noted that Kosovo’s participation in the BoP would play an “extraordinary role in ending conflicts worldwide,” specifically referencing Kosovo’s commitment to provide troops for the International Stabilization Force.

Osmani’s Response: “Side by Side Forever”

Publishing the letter via her social media channels, Osmani emphasized that the strong bond between Pristina and Washington is built to last.

“We will preserve Kosovo’s strong connection with America together, today and forever! I thank President Trump for the letter and for the evaluation he has given to our work,” Osmani stated.

She also welcomed the prospect of “continuing cooperation in the years to come,” hinting at a possible future role in international diplomacy or the Board of Peace itself.

The Context of the Transition

Osmani officially ended her mandate on April 4, 2026, having been in office since 2021. Her departure comes at a critical time for Kosovo:

  • Constitutional Deadline: The Assembly has until April 28 to elect a successor. Currently, Albulena Haxhiu is serving as the Acting President.
  • Political Deadlock: Negotiations between the ruling LVV and opposition parties (LDK and PDK) remain stalled, with the threat of extraordinary elections looming if a new president is not confirmed within the week.
