U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 10% increase in tariffs on Canadian imports, following the airing in Ontario of an anti-tariff commercial featuring the voice and image of former President Ronald Reagan.
In a post on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump condemned the advertisement as a “fraud” and accused Canadian authorities of an “unfriendly act” for not pulling the ad before the World Series baseball games.
“Due to the misrepresentation of facts and this hostile act, I am increasing tariffs on Canada by 10% above the current level,” Trump wrote.
The move came in response to a television campaign by the Ontario government, which quoted Reagan’s 1987 speech saying that “tariffs hurt every American.” The Ronald Reagan Foundation criticized the ad, calling it a “selective and unauthorized use of historical material.”
Canada remains the only G7 nation without a new trade agreement with the United States, while Washington has already imposed tariffs up to 35% on Canadian goods — including 50% on metals and 25% on automobiles.
