U.S. President Donald Trump has said a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin will be organized “very soon,” claiming that efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine are making progress.
“We’re making a lot of progress with Russia and Ukraine. A meeting will be organized very soon,” Trump told reporters.
Asked who would participate, Trump clarified that he was referring to a meeting between Zelensky and Putin.
However, the U.S. president provided no date, location or details about a possible agreement to hold the talks. Neither Kyiv nor Moscow has confirmed plans for the bilateral meeting he described.
Trump’s remarks follow recent diplomatic contacts between Washington, Kyiv and Moscow aimed at potentially restarting negotiations to end the war.
Russia and Ukraine signal openness to negotiations
Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously expressed willingness to resume trilateral talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States in mid-November.
Zelensky has also said Ukraine is prepared to participate in such negotiations, even at short notice, but stressed that progress depends on Russia’s willingness to engage.
“We were also expecting a trilateral meeting in October. But it did not happen because the Russians found another reason not to meet,” Zelensky said.
The possibility of renewed talks comes amid continued diplomatic efforts to bring the two sides to the negotiating table, although major questions remain over the terms of any settlement.
For now, Trump’s announcement has not been followed by official confirmation from either Kyiv or Moscow, leaving the timing and format of any potential meeting uncertain.
