The U.S. military has released footage showing the USS George Washington transiting the Strait of Malacca, between Malaysia and Indonesia, and conducting flight operations over the Indian Ocean, CNN reports.
The time-lapse video, which the military said was recorded on August 13, shows the carrier’s flight deck as it sails through one of the world’s busiest waterways.
The George Washington is heading toward the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has remained at sea for an extended deployment amid the war with Iran, raising concerns among lawmakers and military families.
A sailor fell overboard from the Abraham Lincoln earlier this month, three U.S. officials told CNN, amid reports of deteriorating mental health among members of the ship’s crew.
Additional footage released by the military reportedly shows aircraft conducting nighttime flight operations aboard the George Washington on Tuesday in the Indian Ocean.
The carrier’s deployment to the Middle East leaves the United States without an aircraft carrier in the Pacific theater of operations.
